Jonathan Taylor QC co-edits the fourth edition of Sport: Law and Practice with Adam Lewis QC of Blackstone Chambers

MediaWrites is delighted to highlight the publication of the fourth edition of Sport: Law and Practice, co-edited by Jonathan Taylor QC (co-head of Bird & Bird’s international Sports Group) and Adam Lewis QC from Blackstone Chambers.

The book is a collaboration between the sports lawyers here at Bird & Bird and barristers at Blackstone Chambers as well as leading practitioners from other firms and chambers, all of whom are thanked for their hard work and dedication. It constitutes the seminal text covering the intersection between sport and law.

The latest edition follows the previously published 3rd edition in 2014. It is a comprehensive statement of applicable law and precedent, as well as a practical guide for sports law practitioners, sports governing bodies, event organisers, clubs, sports agencies and commercial partners, arbitrators, universities and students.

This new edition retains and updates all the key chapters from previous editions, including the extended sections on challenges to the actions of sports governing bodies and anti-doping regulation and enforcement (with an introduction to the new 2021 World Anti-Doping Code), as well as new chapters covering increasingly important and emerging areas and issues, including data protection and sport, best practice in sports governance, exploiting sports data, and esports.

The book is organised into the following sections:

  1. Governance of the Sports Sector
  2. Regulating Sport
  3. Anti-Doping Regulation and Enforcement
  4. Disciplinary and Arbitral Proceedings
  5. Challenges to the Actions of Sports Governing Bodies
  6. Relationships between Clubs and Players/Managers
  7. Liability Arising out of Participation in Sport
  8. Capturing the Commercial Value of Sport
  9. Tax Issues in the Sports Sector
  10. Esports

Jonathan Taylor QC, co-head of the international Sports Group at Bird & Bird, comments: “The latest edition of Sport: Law and Practice is an essential resource for sports law practitioners and administrators. The updates to existing chapters and the addition of several new chapters addressing emerging topics will cement its global reputation as the sports law bible”.

MediaWrites often publish content linked to the topics covered in the book, but coming up soon, we will be launching videos including panel discussions involving the co-editors. Stay tuned.
